If you’ve grown tired of your men’s hair loss, you may have decided to do something about it: shave your head. Last week we talked about how to go about shaving your head in the safest, most effective ways. Today we’ll talk about how to care for your bald head afterward.
Many men believe that a bald head, or even one boasting scalp micropigmentation, means less work. Sure, you don’t have to comb it out every morning, but that doesn’t mean your scalp doesn’t need a little TLC.
Continue Using Shampoo and Conditioner
Despite having shaved your head completely, your scalp can still develop a buildup of dirt and oil. If you don’t take care of this, you’ll end up with flaky skin. When you’re in the shower, use a small amount of shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner to prevent this from happening. Avoid using body wash or soap on your scalp. It may seem like an easy option while you’re washing the rest of your body, but these can actually dry out your head and increase dandruff. Your scalp needs to be clean and moisturized if it’s going to look its best.
Protect it From the Sun
Scalp micropigmentation camouflages your men’s hair loss and shaved head, but it isn’t able to do the work of real hair by protecting your scalp from the sun. If you don’t want to experience a sunburn, keep your head protected when you’re out and about with a hat or with a layer of sunscreen. Keep in mind that you can still end up with a scorched scalp (as well as burnt ears and a burnt neck) on cloudy days. Choose a sunscreen that boasts at least SPF 15.
Want her to keep running her fingers over your head? Be sure to moisturize. Without hydration, the scalp quickly becomes rough and dry. Use a sensitive skin moisturizer on your head, especially during winter months when the air is dryer than normal. Drink plenty of water as well to keep yourself (and your scalp) hydrated.
Not sure which moisturizer or lotion to grab? Choose lotions with cocoa butter for ultimate moisture. Certain oils, like tea tree oil, are also effective at moisturizing.
Get a Massage
Whether you can talk your significant other into it or you pay a professional massage therapist, getting a scalp massage can be extremely beneficial when you’ve shaved your head or taken advantage of scalp micropigmentation. Done once a week, scalp massages not only feel amazing, but also help promote healthy blood flow to your scalp and improve circulation.
Maintain the Shave
If you want to keep patches of hair down after your first shave or you simply love the look of your bald head because of your scalp pigmentation treatment, you might need to shave frequently to keep the look. How often you need to shave depends on how fast your remaining hair grows and how dark your hair is. Scalp micropigmentation may help shorter hairs blend in, making it easy for you to go a couple of weeks without a maintenance shave. However, if you begin to notice longer patches of hair, you may need to shave again. Be sure to follow the steps in our previous article for a safe and effective shave.
